How the Northern Ireland players rated during defeat to Costa Rica

Ratings by Paul Ferguson in Panama

Northern Ireland slumped to a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Costa Rica on Sunday, but did any individuals provide bright points for the GAWA?

Paul Ferguson was there; here's his view on the Northern Ireland performances:

Starting XI

Trevor Carson 6: Wasn’t helped by poor defending for Costa Rica’s goals but may feel he should have stopped their second. Made two fine saves to keep the score down.

Aaron Hughes 6: Won his 112th cap in Costa Rica. Hopefully it won’t be the last. Not one to remember with any relish for the legendary defender.

Gareth McAuley 6: Made a couple of fantastic headed interceptions in the first half but like his team-mates found it tough going as this friendly wore on.

Craig Cathcart 6: Good to see the Watford defender back on international duty. He’ll have better days than this moving forward.

Lee Hodson 6: Had a testing time before being replaced with 30 minutes left. Will hope to have a future under Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Corry Evans 6: Industrious as always and got forward late on to fire a long distance effort over the bar.

Paddy McNair 6: Impressive in the scoreless draw against Panama but much more subdued versus Costa Rica.

Jonny Evans 6: Started in an unfamiliar midfield role for second match running and showed touches of quality, but surely will return to defence next time out.

Stuart Dallas 6: Tried to make things happen down the left flank, but it was a frustrating and tiring match for the Leeds man.

Liam Boyce 5: Unfortunate to come off injured after 38 minutes. Shot wide early on when he would have hoped to have hit the target.

Josh Magennis 6: Won headers early on but the longer the game progressed the less the big striker was involved. Played for an hour.

Substitutes

Shay McCartan (Boyce, 38 mins) 6: Plenty of endeavour in attack.

Conor McLaughlin (Hodson, 60 mins) 6: Steady enough at the back.

Ryan McLaughlin (Magennis, 60 mins) 5: Tough to make an impact.

Luke McCullough (Catchcart, 73 mins) 5: Didn’t get into the game.

Conor Hazard (Carson, 73 mins) 6: First cap for Celtic goalkeeper.

Jordan Thompson (C Evans, 85 mins) 5: No time to shine.

Unused subs: Shane Ferguson, Gavin Whyte, Paul Smyth, Shayne Lavery, Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
