Josh Carson is promising to put on a performance for the small number of Northern Ireland fans who are planning to travel to tomorrow night’s game against Wales in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

The Ipswich Town youngster had his teenage dreams crushed by the Republic on Tuesday night as his international debut ended in a 5-0 humiliation.

His performance, however, did offer signs of encouragement, with his play in the early part of the game causing problems for Giovanni Trapattoni’s team, before they took control after going 1-0 up.

A vastly improved performance is required from Nigel Worthington’s team after they suffered Northern Ireland’s worst defeat in nine years and Carson is confident it will come.

“The atmosphere in the dressing room after the match was very down, but hopefully we’ll make things right against Wales,” said the 17-year-old.

“We’ll put in a good performance against Wales because we’ve nothing to lose and we’ll be ready to battle against them.”

With Steven Davis and Sammy Clingan out of the squad, Carson is likely to get another chance to show what he can do against the Welsh.

Before Tuesday’s game only 48 Northern Ireland fans had bought tickets for tomorrow night’s return trip, but the Irish FA is now offering free tickets to all 210 fans who attended the game against the Republic.

“As far as my international debut is concerned I‘m proud to be there and be part of it,” he said.

“It’s not the result I would have wanted though.

“I was trying to get forward as much as possible. I was told to pull wide, try to get the ball and get at them. I thought I played well enough in my first 70 minutes of international football.

“I don’t think that we deserved a 5-0 drubbing, but that’s football.”
