Linfield aces are unable to stop Ukraine earning Cup plaudits

By Graham Luney

Linfield's players continued to make a big impact for the Northern Ireland team at the Turkish Women's Cup but they couldn't prevent the side suffering a 3-1 defeat to Ukraine.

Blues striker Kirsty McGuinness netted on the hour mark to reduce the deficit to 2-1 but the Ukrainians replied quickly to restore their two goal advantage.

Linfield team-mate Megan Bell, who scored her first senior international goal in the 1-1 draw with Romania, produced the right wing cross and when the defence failed to clear, McGuinness fired home from 10 yards.

Also playing for Alfie Wylie's senior international team was Linfield's Ashley Hutton.

Blues goalkeeper Lauren Perry came on as substitute for the last 15 minutes and Linfield's Rebecca McKenna also played the last 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, former Linfield defender Jim Ervin has agreed a one-year contract extension with Ballymena United.

Boss David Jeffrey said: "Pleased is an understatement, we are beyond delighted.

"At all times we need our senior players to lead the team in terms of performance and attitude, not just on the pitch but also in the changing room and during training. Jim Ervin is the epitome of a leader amongst men."
