Manchester United new boy Angel flying high in win over Germans

By Conor McLaughlin

Manchester United's big-name signing Angel di Maria bagged a hat-trick of assists – plus a goal – as Argentina claimed hollow revenge for their World Cup final defeat by overcoming Germany 4-2 in last night's friendly.

Though both sides boasted numerous changes from the teamsheets submitted at the Maracana Stadium in July, it was the familiar figure of Man City's Sergio Aguero who opened the scoring after 21 minutes in Dusseldorf's Esprit Arena before Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela registered his first international goal before the interval.

Federico Fernandez put Argentina 3-0 ahead early in the second-half and, having provided the ammunition for his team mates, Di Maria promptly got in on the scoring act himself when he extended the visitors' advantage further on 50 minutes.

Germany – who roared back from 4-0 down to draw with Sweden during World Cup qualifying – threatened to make a game of it when first Andre Schurrle and then Rio hero Mario Goetze pulled goals back. But there was to be no late drama as Argentina held on for a win that will scarcely banish painful memories of their summer heartbreak.
