As it happened: Northern Ireland take another step towards Russia
Northern Ireland have secured at least a second place finish in World Cup qualifying Group C with a 2-0 win over Czech Republic.
The result at Windsor Park gives Michael O’Neill’s men a strong chance of bagging a play-off spot for next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia.
After a solid start from the Czech Republic, who enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening exchanges, Jonny Evans netted the opener on 28 minutes, flicking a header over goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik after Ollie Norwood recycled a cleared corner.
It was two care of another West Brom man on 41 minutes when Chris Brunt curled in a free-kick.
The second half was a bit of a non-event, not that anyone in green was worried. Northern Ireland will finish in the top two and have a good chance of making it into a play-off.
