Northern Ireland v Faroe Islands: Evans issues call to arms

By Stuart McKinley

Jonny Evans is demanding a Northern Ireland victory against the Faroe Islands at Windsor Park tomorrow night so that Nigel Worthington’s men can go into four crunch fixtures this autumn with their Euro 2012 destiny in their own hands.

A victory over the Faroes would be the first since the campaign kicked off with a 1-0 triumph in Slovenia, but three points would put Northern Ireland into third place in Group C, a point better off than Serbia and two behind Slovenia, but with a match in hand.

And the timing would be perfect ahead of next month’s home qualifier against the Serbs.

That is swiftly followed by a trip to Estonia before the return game in Belfast a month later. Wins in all four games could mean a play-off spot is already secured before the final game — a daunting trip to Italy.

“We had a better start than we had to previous campaigns with the win in Slovenia,” said Evans.

“We have to win this one now to get us back on track and try to qualify.

“The home results have been a big factor in getting us close. We have to get as many points from the home games as we can.

“Every time we play at Windsor Park we believe we can beat anyone, with the crowd behind us and our record there speaks for itself.”
