Norman Whiteside has recalled the intimidating atmosphere in the Luis Casanova stadium and then the post-match party atmosphere in the team hotel the night Northern Ireland defeated hosts Spain in the 1982 World Cup finals.
our decades on from that glorious evening in Valencia, the Manchester United legend is back in Spain on holiday and missing tonight’s reunion of the team that shook the planet. Whiteside’s part in the epic victory will never be forgotten.
He was only 17, and eight days earlier had become the youngest footballer to play at the World Cup, beating a record previously held by Brazilian legend Pele.
Spain wanted to rough up their opponents early on and Whiteside was having none of it. After Mal Donaghy was controversially sent off an hour in with Northern Ireland leading through Gerry Armstrong’s 47th-minute goal, manager Billy Bingham took Whiteside off on 73 to bring on Sammy Nelson.
For Whiteside, who enjoyed many marvellous moments in his career at club and international level, the victory over Spain holds a special place in his heart.
“It will always be remembered,” said Whiteside, who has sent a video message to be played at this evening’s get-together at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.
“The ground was very intimidating. Valencia was like that as a stadium which is why they took us there. It was a bit like the old Upton Park. I remember putting Juanito seven rows into the stand and they weren’t happy!
Spain '82: Special episode
“I don’t recall much about the game, though there was Mal’s little push and the referee couldn’t wait to send him off. Before that, out of the blue, Gerry scored after Billy Hamilton set him up.
“Billy didn’t get enough credit for his brilliant run down the wing. I always joke with Gerry that he closed his eyes and hit the ball and it went through the defender’s and goalkeeper’s legs and he says, ‘Yeah I nutmegged them both’,” added Whiteside.
The Belfast man continued: “It is unbelievable it is 40 years ago. I remember we had a pocket of supporters stuck in the corner making themselves heard and going over to them after.
“Fair play to Bingy, he invited a lot of people back to our hotel and we had a party. I was on sparkling water because I was only 17!
“There was a brilliant atmosphere at the hotel with the players and supporters and it was great to be part of that celebration. That’s what our wee country is all about.”
