Serbia v Northern Ireland: Serb ace Babovic warns Worthy

By Steven Beacom

Northern Ireland have no chance in Friday night’s crucial European Championship qualifier, according to Serbian star Stefan Babovic.

In an exclusive interview with the Belfast Telegraph, the Partizan Belgrade player claimed that Serbia are stronger than Nigel Worthington’s side in EVERY position.

It’s quite a statement and sure to provide extra incentive for the Northern Ireland players, already fired up for the crucial Group C clash in Belgrade.

Babovic also added that after a troubled campaign to date it is Serbia’s destiny to qualify for the Euro 2012 finals.

It’s another incredible boast given that Serbia are currently languishing in fifth place in the six team group, behind Northern Ireland who have one point more and a game in hand!

On the pitch the Serbs have failed to deliver so far, off it their rioting fans in Italy brought shame on the competition.

Uefa punished banned Serbian fans from Friday’s game, which will be attended by 265 Northern Ireland followers.

Babovic, said: “We had a few problems off the field with our fans in Italy, but now it is very important that we put all that behind us and go on and win.

“Northern Ireland are a good team, but I feel at the moment we have better players than them in every position.

“You are now beginning to see a different Serbia. We feel it is our destiny to go on and reach the finals.”
