We're ready for Ronaldo

By Steven Beacom

He's lightning quick. He can perform tricks that ordinary footballers can only dream of doing.

His free-kicks are spectacular and deadly, and although he usually plays on the wing, he’s also dangerous in the air.

He’s famous, too, or infamous, depending on your viewpoint for his wink at Wayne Rooney as his then Manchester United team-mate was sent off at the 2006 World Cup Finals.

So just how do Northern Ireland go about stopping Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at Windsor Park tonight (7.45pm).

Well, the good news is that they have done it before.

Last October Ronaldo was all ready to celebrate his 100th international appearance by beating Northern Ireland, but Michael O’Neill’s team had other ideas and pulled off a fantastic 1-1 draw.

Goalkeeper Roy Carroll and his defence were heroes that night. Now they must do it all again, determined not to blink first, as Roy seemed to tell his his old Man Utd team-mate.
