Wylie's girls go down fighting in Istria cup opener

Slovakia 1-0 Northern Ireland

By Staff Reporter

Northern Ireland's women's side opened their Istria Cup campaign with a 1-0 loss to Slovakia. Heartbreakingly, the matchwinner came in the final minute from Jana Vojtekova after Northern Ireland had produced a battling performance.

Alfie Wylie's side will be looking to shake off that disappointment when they return to action against hosts Croatia tomorrow.

The Istria Women's Cup, established in 2013, offers the Northern Ireland side an opportunity to warm up for key Euro 2017 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Italy next month.

Wylie said: "We are learning about new players with some not available.

"The players will also learn more about one another and hopefully we can gain more confidence.

"It's a friendly tournament but it gives you an opportunity to practise things and assess the players.

"The Czech Republic at home and Italy away games are massive but we'd love to come out of them with four points. That's our focus."

The Czech Republic clash is up first on Friday, April 8.
