Ards’ heroes star on small screen

The glory days will be back at Ards tonight.

That’s because the Championship club’s Special Efforts Committee are launching a DVD celebrating the Irish Cup wins of 1952, 1969 and 1974.

It is hoped that many of the players from the cup winning teams will be in attendance.

Previously unseen footage of Ards' cup final appearances has been lovingly restored by the Special Efforts Committee.

The committee will present their DVD at a launch in the Ards Sports Club tonight.

Entitled ‘When the Ards Go Up...' this original release brings together home-made footage from each of the finals and also features special clips of the Ards sides as they prepare to leave the town on cup final morning.

There is also a short piece on the annual re-union dinner of the Ards four-trophy team of 1973/74.

The idea for the DVD came about when SEC member and local author Hugh Robinson suggested that the committee make use of his own home-made footage of the 1969 and 1974 finals to help raise funds for the football club.

The 1952 footage was loaned to the committee by former North End Supporters' Club stalwart John Martin and so the project was hatched.

The DVD is priced £10 and lasts for approximately 55 minutes. The 1969 and 1974 and reunion dinner film was previously released on VHS video while the 1952 final has never been officially released.

Fans will tonight get a sneak preview and the chance to reminisce with a few of the players who made it all possible. The event starts at 8pm.
