Glenavon Euro vision hits the high notes

By Adam McKendry

Glenavon hit Ards for six at the Bangor Fuels Arena as Andrew Mitchell and Stephen Murray both hit doubles in their 6-1 Danske Bank Premiership win.

Joel Cooper and Marc Griffin also hit the target for Gary Hamilton's Lurgan Blues, who extend their advantage over fourth-placed Linfield to six points and take a firm grip on the European places

Reece Glendinning's second half free-kick was little consolation for Ards, who suffered their fourth straight defeat.

"We were really poor again, defending was really poor and it's another shocking display by us," blasted angry Ards boss Colin Nixon.

"Defensively we're all at sea at the minute. We were doing well earlier in the season but we need to improve as quickly as possible."

Elsewhere, Marcus Kane's last minute header took Glentoran back into the top six with a dramatic 2-1 win away to Carrick Rangers.

Kane flicked in James Knowles' free-kick to secure all three points after strikes from Robbie McDaid and Darren Henderson cancelled each other out, with Henderson also missing a second half penalty for the hosts.

And Cliftonville recorded a 3-1 win away to Warrenpoint, thanks to goals from Jay Donnelly, Conor McDonald and Joe Gormley, Martin Murray responding for Matthew Tipton's side.
