Marty McCann will make a play for Ards job

By Conor McLaughlin

Club legend Marty McCann is on a shortlist of managerial candidates set to be interviewed by the Ards board this evening.

McCann, who enjoyed County Antrim Shield and League Cup success with the north Down outfit more than 20 years ago, was an interested observer in Ards' 2-0 defeat to Linfield in the weekend's Danske Bank Premiership encounter at the Bangor Fuels Arena.

He is in contention to replace Niall Currie - who was unveiled as Portadown's new boss last Monday after more than five years in charge of the Red & Blues - but faces competition from a number of applicants, including former Glentoran captain Colin Nixon.

It's understood ex-Glens and Cliftonville chief Eddie Patterson will not be spoken to and that Ards are hopeful of making an appointment within the next 48 hours to give the new man time to work with the players ahead of Saturday's trip to Coleraine.
