Match-winner McElroy aiming to finish season with a flourish

Dungannon Swifts 1 Ards 0

By Adrian Rutherford

Paul McElroy is aiming for a big finish to the season after ending Dungannon's goal drought.

The Swifts beat Ards to register their first victory - and goal - in the Danske Bank Premiership since Boxing Day.

The winner came in the 52nd minute from McElroy, who scored with a well-taken finish.

It was the 23-year-old's first in the league since finding the net in a 2-1 win over Ballymena on October 7. He had missed more than a month after getting injured in November.

McElroy said: "I'd like to have scored more. I was flying around October time, but then tore my hamstring against Ballyclare in the League Cup quarter-final.

"I was out for five or six weeks and then came back around the Christmas period. Fitness-wise, I probably wasn't 100%, but thankfully now I've had a good run of games.

"The goal today should lift my confidence and hopefully I'll get a few more before the end of the season."
