Ballinamallard and Swifts share the scoreless spoils

By Gareth Cauldwell

In a game of few chances, Ballinamallard Utd and Dungannon Swifts shared the spoils at Ferney Park last night.

Both defences were on top throughout the encounter with the closest the game had to a breakthrough coming from a Shane McCabe pile-driver eight minutes into the second half.

There was a hectic, scrappy opening with little pattern to the game in the early stages as both sides struggled to settle.

The first real attempt did not arrive until the 21st minute when McCabe latched onto a dropping ball 25 yards from goal but his well struck volley was at Coleman in the Swifts goal.

It was the away side though who were to show the greater urgency over the remainder of the half as they went on to enjoy the better of the exchanges.

Cormac Burke had a shot roll narrowly wide and this was quickly followed by a Jamie Glackin shot that was pushed away at the near post by Mallards goalkeeper Alvin Rouse. David Armstrong then headed just over from a corner while Paul McElroy fired into the side-netting.

At the break though the game remained scoreless although the home side were within a whisker of opening the scoring in the 53rd minute when McCabe let fly with a rasping drive that pushed onto the bar by Coleman.

The home side continued to knock the ball about well, but neither side were able to carve out a goal-scoring opportunity as the game finished in a draw.
