Gavin Dykes quits as Ballinamallard seek fresh impetus in relegation fight
Ballinamallard United 0-4 Ards
Gavin Dykes last night stepped down as manager of beleaguered Ballinamallard United.
The final straw for the former Derry City and Sligo Rovers supremo came when Ards coasted to a 4-0 victory in a "must-win" game for the Mallards on Saturday.
Speaking immediately after that Ferney Park contest, Dykes said: "We have to decide whether the best thing for the football club is whether I stay for the next eight games or whether we can get somebody in to give it a bounce.
"That's not something we take lightly. I have far too much respect for the people at this club, they are smashing people and what they have done to keep this club in the Premiership is amazing and, after a defeat like that in a must-win game, it's very disappointing."
Dykes yesterday tendered his resignation, with the Premiership's basement club releasing a brief statement saying: "The Senior Committee of Ballinamallard United Football Club have reluctantly accepted the resignation of first team manager Gavin Dykes. The club would like to place on record their gratitude for his commitment, loyalty and passion over the past two seasons."
Ards bossed matters from start to finish, with Ross Clarke grabbing a hat-trick and Callum Byers also netting for Colin Nixon's side.
