McAree admits Swifts had a bit of luck as Mallards shot down

Dungannon Swifts 2-0 Ballinamallard United

By Adrian Rutherford

Rodney McAree admitted Dungannon Swifts rode their luck after labouring to victory over Ballinamallard United.

Goals from Paul McElroy and Christopher Hegarty saw the hosts beat the league's bottom club.

But the newly-crowned League Cup winners didn't have it all their own way at Stangmore Park.

Sean Noble twice hit the woodwork for the Fermanagh side in the first half. Early on his shot across goal came back off the post, before a well-taken free-kick clipped the crossbar.

Dungannon stepped it up in the second half, taking the lead through McElroy. Hegarty then made it 2-0 with a close-range finish.

McAree said: "We didn't start well and Ballinamallard had a couple of chances - they've hit the post and the crossbar - and we've ridden our luck.

"But we kept going, and our second half performance was very, very good."

Ballinamallard stay bottom after a 23rd loss from 29 games.

Boss Gavin Dykes said: "We're disappointed - we believed we could get something. We were good in the first half but just couldn't get a goal. We've done everything but score. But we didn't come out for the second half, and that's happened too often."
