Twigg pulls plug on move to Sky Blues

By Graham Luney

Ballymena United boss David Jeffrey will continue his search for fresh firepower after failing to net Gary Twigg.

The Portadown striker had agreed a pre-contractual deal to join the Sky Blues but he has pulled out of the move.

United said in a statement: "Ballymena United would like to clarify recent speculation with regards to Gary Twigg.

"A pre-contractual agreement had been in place for Gary to join the Sky Blues at the opening of the next transfer window. The player has had a change of heart and asked for the contract to be withdrawn. The club have respected his wishes and the transfer will no longer proceed."

Jeffrey's side are back in Premiership action today against Cliftonville at the Showgrounds (3pm).

"Cliftonville are coming off the back of a couple of defeats and they are probably in the last chance saloon with regard to that second place," said Jeffrey.

"It's going to be very, very tough but we will just think about ourselves.

"The good thing after winning against Warrenpoint in our last game is that we're further away from that relegation slot and that is the first aim. We need to get as far away from those bottom two spots - those were the terms of reference and that's what the message will be to the players."
