Carrick Rangers' County Antrim Shield semi-final spot comes at a cost

Carrick Rangers 4 Dundela 2

By Ian Callender

Two goals in the first ten minutes killed this game as a contest as Carrick Rangers eased into the semi-finals of the Toals County Antrim Shield.

Denver Gage and Mikel Suarez scored the early goals, Lee Chapman added a third within 30 seconds of the restart and Gavin Taggart's penalty rammed home Carrick's superiority.

Dundela, though, scored in the second half through David McMaster and Jordan Hughes claimed a deserved consolation.

The big downside for Carrick was the injury to skipper Mark Surgenor following an innocent challenge by Stephen McCain midway through the first half.

He was stretchered off with a suspected broken ankle, and Davy McAlinden also had to contend with the loss of defender Stuart McMullan not long after.

The Premier Intermediate side made a confident start but, after Carrick's first two raids, found themselves two goals down.

The first home attack nearly resulted in a freak goal when goalkeeper Ryan McBride's clearance rebounded off Sean Green and landed on the crossbar.

Eamon McAllister's cross from the resulting corner eventually reached Gage at the back post and he fired home.

A minute later, Chapman skipped to the byline on the right, the cross was perfectly met by Suarez and he headed in.

Any hope of a second-half comeback was dashed immediately on the resumption. McAllister's shot was saved by McBride's feet but Chapman followed up.

The introduction of Mark McClelland for Dundela had an immediate impact as his first touch sent Hughes through and his low shot brought a finger-tip save.

In the next minute, Adam Calvert's cross from the left reached McMaster and he shot home.

Calvert brought down Green inside the box five minutes from time and Taggart sent McBride the wrong way from the penalty spot before Hughes' consolation.
