Cliftonville 5 Glenavon 3

Marty Quinn last night insisted his Glenavon side would turn their season around after slumping to a fourth defeat in five games.

Twice ahead at Solitude — through a comical Peter McCann strike and an opportunist finish from Mark Miskimmin — the Lurgan Blues contrived to find themselves three behind with Cliftonville roaring back thanks to goals from Chris Scannell, Barry Holland, George McMullan and a Ciaran Caldwell double.

All of which means that, with just one point to their name, Glenavon remain rooted to the foot of the Premiership — but Quinn’s in no mood to be defeatist.

“Until such time as my chairman and board tell me otherwise, I’m still the manager of this football club,” he asserted.

“Before the game, the chairman spoke to me and asked me why I was putting pressure on myself but the fact is I’m not stupid, I know the standards which we set haven’t been met and we need to do better.

“I’ll always put pressure on myself to succeed and improve and I need to instil that into the players also.

“Right the way through the team we need to step things up a level because we made far too many mistakes against Cliftonville and were punished for it.

“We scored twice in the first-half but the Reds came out after the break looking like a team who wanted to win it and I can’t say we matched that attitude.”

Things had started so well for the visitors with McCann’s sixth minute strike which home keeper Ryan Brown appeared to have covered.

The Reds were level on 19 minutes thanks to a smart finish from Caldwell but Glenavon restored their lead just before the half-hour when Miskimmin netted.

Scannell equalised on 41 minutes and Holland lashed home to put the Reds in front for the first time on 51 minutes.

Ref Colin Burns gave a penalty for Jay Magee’s trip on Scannell and Caldwell made it 4-2.

McMullan made it 5-2 before David Magee cut the deficit.
