Donnelly at the double as Cliftonville run riot against hapless PSNI
Cliftonville 7 PSNI 0
Cliftonville took no prisoners as the PSNI were swatted aside in a one-way contest at Solitude last night.
Five goals to the good inside half an hour, the Reds took their foot off the gas in the second half but still had more than enough in the tank to see off their Championship visitors.
Daniel Hughes, Stephen Garrett and Jay Donnelly each netted doubles but, unfortunately for Scott McCrory, it was the police skipper's own goal that proved the highlight of a comfortable evening for Barry Gray's charges.
Things might have been different had Lukasz Adamczyk not been denied by Brett Long inside 50 seconds, but any expectation of a cup upset were snuffed out inside an incredible first half-hour that saw the Reds race clear.
First, Hughes netted from the penalty spot after being felled by Dylan Wilson before Garrett made it 2-0 with a simple conversion after Ciaran Caldwell's shot had been stopped by keeper Jordan Williamson.
Another Garrett shot crept across the face of goal, with Jay Donnelly reacting to slide in at the back post and find the net via the woodwork, with Hughes slamming home the fourth after Caldwell's cross caused havoc inside the area.
Visiting skipper McCrory then delivered an astounding own goal to make it five. Assuming possession wide on the left, his attempted backpass to the keeper ended in disaster as the ball sailed wide of its intended target and into the back of the net.
Quite how neither Adamczyk nor Ashley McDermott scored with the goal gaping just after the break will be one for the chief inspector to investigate, and it wasn't long before Garrett showed them how it should be done at the other end, lashing in from close range following Martin Donnelly's free-kick delivery.
Number seven wasn't long in coming with Jay Donnelly slamming home to comfortably book Cliftonville's deserved quarter-final berth.
