Joe Gormley thanked Cliftonville boss Paddy McLaughlin for sticking by him after ending his mini goal-drought against Institute on Saturday.

Gormley's 48th minute strike proved sufficient to earn all three points at Solitude, with the Reds striker personally relieved to have hit the goal trail again after a barren run of six games.

"I'm delighted to get the goal and help the team get another win but I just want to thank Paddy and the staff for keeping faith with me," said Cliftonville's all-time leading scorer.

"Anybody who knows me will tell you I'm a team player and if Paddy had told me I was on the bench over the last few weeks, I would have had no complaints. I'm a striker and I'm supposed to so score goals and if the coaching staff had said they were going with Rory [Donnelly] and Ryan Curran up front, I would have understood.

"I'm just glad they stuck with me and hopefully I've repaid them with that goal."

McLaughlin, toasting a fourth win from five games since his appointment, said: "Joe's standards are so high that it's a crisis when he doesn't score in a match.

"His quality is there for all to see and it has been for years."

Institute interim boss Kevin Doherty - who has been in place since McLaughlin moved between the clubs at the start of last month - reflected: "We came here and had a right go and we're disappointed we haven't come away with anything," admitted interim boss Kevin Doherty.

"There's no point in saying we're happy to come to Cliftonville and only lose 1-0 because we're not, but I'm delighted with how the players are putting my ethos into practice."
