Coleraine 2-1 Ballinamallard: Teenager Jamie McGonigle's late winner stuns the Mallards

By Keith Thomas

Teenage striker Jamie McGonigle's late winner landed Coleraine a first victory over the Mallards in 13 attempts.

Whitey Anderson's men, who had midfielder James McKenna sent off for an ill-timed tackle on midfielder Ruairi Harkin early in the second half, led through Liam Martin's goal.

But resilient Coleraine made the most of the extra man to pile on second half pressure and turn the game around.

Striker James McLaughlin came off the bench to grab an equaliser, repeating his success against Glentoran on the opening day of the season when he scored the only goal of the game.

Leon Carters squandered the first opportunity when he directed a header over for the visitors in the 10th minute. But Coleraine responded with lively Brad Lyons making space for a shot but the winger couldn't find the target.

Home keeper Michael Doherty denied Martin when he outsmarted the Coleraine defence after 25 minutes while at the other end striker Ian Parkhill headed Harkin's free kick wide.

But the Mallards snatched the lead with Martin racing in to beat Doherty thanks to a deflected shot after 28 minutes.

Then Lyons flipped an overhead shot close to goal with United's Barbados international keeper Alvin Rouse scrambling in vain to get to the ball.

Ballinamallard lost McKenna to a straight red card three minutes into the second period when he caught Harkin late.

Lyons missed out again before Coleraine's pressure finally told. The winger swept the ball across the penalty area and substitute McLaughlin applied the finish with 20 minutes remaining.

And a minute into injury time McGonigle hit a superb winner to stun the Mallards.
