Doherty is key man for us, says Coleraine boss Kearney

By Stuart McKinley

Coleraine manager Oran Kearney has hailed the part played by goalkeeper Michael Doherty in taking the Bannsiders to third place in the Danske Bank Premiership table.

After moving around between hometown club Limavady United and Institute, as well as an earlier spell with Coleraine, the 32-year-old has now found a home at the Showgrounds and he is a big reason why they are unbeaten in their last 10 league games - winning seven of them.

And if that run is stretched to 11 after tonight's trip to Ballinamallard United (8pm) Kearney's men, who are only six points behind leaders Crusaders, will go second in the table.

"Michael Doherty has been fantastic," said Kearney of the man who won Player of the Month for October.

"He was maybe a bit nomadic in his younger days having moved around between Coleraine, Institute and Limavady, but he is settled with us now and at that age where we are getting the best years of his career.

"Michael's experience has been vital and he hasn't let us down when he has been called upon."

Doherty has recorded five clean sheets during the Bannsiders' 10-match unbeaten run, conceding just five goals in that time.

"It is great for me to have a goalkeeper that I know I can rely on," said Kearney.

"It's very important, no matter how well you are doing, that you have a goalkeeper that you have total confidence in.

"That's not to say he won't make mistakes - everyone will - it's all about working hard to minimise those."
