Champions Crusaders see off Ards challenge to open season with win

Irish League champions Crusaders opened their 2018/19 season with a win after seeing off a tough challenge from Ards at Seaview.

Winger Michael Carvill gave the Crues the lead in the 23rd minute and new singing from Derry City Rory Patterson grabbed a debut goal in the 31st.

Ards replied immediately through midfielder Gareth Tommons who pulled one back in the 32nd minute.

Patterson then missed a penalty in the 42nd minute before Tommons equalised after half time in the 56th minute.

Jordan Forsythe headed the Seaview men back infront in the 69th minute before Declan Caddell assured victory with a 91st minute header.

Crusaders will next face Ballymena United at home on Saturday while Ards entertain Glentoran.
