Watch: This is why you play football, says Crusaders hero David Cushley

By Gareth Hanna

Emotional Crusaders' hero David Cushley was a little bit lost for words after full-time on Saturday afternoon - and who can blame him.

Clutching the Gibson Cup and posing for hundreds of photos with the Crues' support, all of these celebrations were down to his came role at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

Whenever he came off the bench, his side were trailing 1-0 and the Cup was heading to Coleraine.

Cue a set-up for Philip Lowry's equaliser and a ruthless finish for the winner from super-sub Cushley.

"Ecstatic," he smiled before kissing the trophy. "It's been a rough year for personal reasons and this is unbelievable. I'm buzzing.

"You're annoyed not to be playing but with Owens, Whyte and Heatley playing ahead of you, they're the three best forwards in the league. It's unbelievable and a great day for the fans."

Cathair Friel had given the Braidmen the lead before Cushley's late heroics avoided another title collapse at the same ground at which the Crues' faltered last year.

"You could see through the whole match that it was edgy," he said. "Everyone was scared to make a mistake but that's why you play - for it to come down to games like this.

"It's the last day of the season to win the league and in the last five minutes to end up winning it - it's unbelievable."
