Whyte hopes top player prize kicks off special week

By Steven Beacom

Crusaders ace Gavin Whyte has started the biggest week of his career by winning the Ulster Footballer of the Year award.

And the NI U21 international could follow it up on Saturday by helping the Crues win their third league title in four years and landing a move to Leeds.

The Elland Road outfit are keen on the 22-year-old winger, aiming for success at the weekend when Crusaders play Ballymena United at the Showgrounds.

Winning the prestigious Ulster Footballer of the Year prize at the Titanic Hotel in Belfast last night, Whyte followed in the footsteps of Irish League greats like Jackie Milburn, Wilbur Cush, Glenn Ferguson and Liam Boyce.

"I'm very proud to win this award," said Whyte. "It's a great honour. Hopefully now we can go and win the title. I've won two titles with Crusaders previously and winning it again this weekend would be incredible."
