Cushley hits treble as Sky Blues go that extra mile

By Stuart McKinley

David Cushley crashed home a hat-trick to send Ballymena United into the quarter-finals of the County Antrim Shield.

The Sky Blues had to do things the hard way though as their 10 men needed extra time to see off Belfast Telegraph Championship 1 side Donegal Celtic.

After a scoreless first half Mark Surgeoner was sent off shortly after the break and things got worse for Ballymena when Ryan Dunlop put DC ahead.

Cushley volleyed home an equaliser to take the game to extra time and he then put Glenn Ferguson’s side ahead when he fired home after being set up by Darren Boyce in the first added period.

He then completed his treble with a penalty in the second period to seal the win.

Bangor were the biggest scorers of the night, beating Glebe Rangers 6-0 at Clandeboye Park, with Jordan Forsythe emulating Cushley by netting three times.

He scored twice early in the game and Paul McDowell scored the third as Bangor took control in the first half.

Forsythe claimed his third early in the second half and further goals from Andy Long and McDowell followed in the space of a couple of minutes.

Newington YC also booked their place in the last eight with a 2-1 win over Immaculata.
