Long trip: Derry boss Kenny Shiels is wary of the threat from hosts Cork

Derry City will embark on the long journey to Turner's Cross yet again this evening looking for their third victory of the season over Cork City.

Kenny Shiels' team have had the upper hand against Cork on both occasions the two teams have met this season, with the Candystripes winning 1-0 in a league encounter at the Brandywell in March before enjoying another victory last week in the EA Sports League Cup quarter-final, this time at Turner's Cross.

And the Derry City manager has acknowledged that John Caulfield's side will be out to gain revenge this time around.

"I think Cork have won five games on the bounce and they haven't conceded hardly at all in those games," said Shiels.

"They have turned the corner and I'm sure they will be looking to exact some revenge on us, so they'll be coming out with a very motivated team."

Derry go into the game, however, on the back of yet another disappointment against local rivals Finn Harps on Tuesday.

The Candystripes were hopeful of avenging their defeat at Ballybofey on the opening day of the campaign, but they were denied victory by Sean Houston's 90th-minute equaliser.

"We are hungover a wee bit from the Finn Harps game and we have got to get ourselves back into a position to compete," said Shiels. "You have to say it was a good game for neutral people to watch and I'm sure they'll have enjoyed the experience and they might think we'll come back and watch Derry City again."

The heavy schedule of games is also beginning to have an effect on the Derry squad, and Shiels is already sweating on the fitness of two of his regulars.

"Rory (Patterson) and Conor (McCormack) are both doubts, but hopefully they will pass fitness tests," said Shiels.
