Derry move to snap up Scottish striker McManus

Derry City have signed former Hibernian striker Tam McManus on a one-year deal.

The 28-year-old comes to the Brandywell from MLS Side Colorado Rapids whom he joined last March.

Although his registration won’t come through in time for this evening's League of Ireland Premier Division match at Shamrock Rovers, he is expected to make his debut next week at home to Galway United.

His preferred role is up front but he has also played on the right wing where manager Stephen Kenny will probably look to play him as a replacement for Niall McGinn.

This evening is Derry’s first visit to Rovers’ new Tallaght stadium and they go there aiming to extend their unbeaten start to the new season. That looked like being a very different story when City trailed Cork 1-0 at home in the closing stages last Friday evening.

But injury times goals from Ciaran Martyn and newcomer Aaron Nash stole the points to leave Derry level with champions Bohemians and Galway at the top of the table with three games played so far.

Kenny is looking to players like Thomas Stewart (pictured) and Martyn to weigh in with plenty of goals this season to take the pressure off striker Mark Farren on whom City can be too reliant at times.

He knows his side got out of jail last week and is anticipating another tough battle tonight at Tallaght.

“We’ll have to fight tooth and nail to get the better of Rovers,” he said. “They will want to bounce right back from their 2-0 defeat against Bohs last Friday so we’ll have to be on our toes.

“Despite the victory over Cork last week there is still room for improvement.

“A late win is always good for a team’s morale and I want to keep the momentum going.”

l PORTADOWN will aim to go top of the IFA Championship tonight as they travel to take on Killymoon Rangers on the Cookstown club’s 3G artificial pitch (8.00pm).

Leaders Loughgall, who are a point ahead but have played twice more, don’t have a game.

Elsewhere, Coagh travel to Ballyclare, Donegal Celtic host Banbridge Town, Armagh City are at home to Larne and Glebe Rangers are at Limavady.
