Derry City ended a forgettable season with a comprehensive defeat at Longford Town last night.

The Candystripes were second best throughout as Longford, hungrier to finish in sixth place, dominated throughout.

Longford got their reward on the stroke of half time when they were awarded a penalty by referee Robert Hennessey, who adjudged that Rob Cornwall had handled the ball as he attempted to clear it away from David O'Sullivan. The City defender protested his innocence but there was little he could do but watch on as O'Sullivan made no mistake from 12 yards, despite the best efforts of Patton who got a hand to the shot.

Longford doubled the lead on 56 minutes when Mark Rossiter tried his luck from all of 35 yards and his effort fooled goalkeeper Patton who thought the ball was heading wide before it struck the inside of the post and crept into the net.

Two then became three just six minutes later when Gary Shaw beat Ryan McBride to a free kick and headed in from close range.

It just got worse for the Candystripes then as they conceded a second penalty, Patton fouling Shaw, giving referee Robert Hennessey an easy decision. Patrick Sullivan slammed home the penalty for 4-0.

City restored some pride in the closing stages, as Ronan Curtis and Rob Cornwall both found the net, but the game was already over as a contest.
