Doherty saves day as Derry miss golden chance
Drogheda Utd 0-0 Derry City
It was a frustrating evening for Derry City in Drogheda as they were held to a forgettable scoreless draw at United Park.
With Shamrock Rovers, Bray Wanderers and Limerick all dropping points elsewhere, this was very much an opportunity missed for the Candystripes.
Kenny Shiels made one change to the team which drew at Dundalk in midweek, giving Mikhail Kennedy his first start in eight games at the expense of Nathan Boyle.
Kennedy certainly started the game well, as Derry won four early corners without any dividend.
Drogheda were also showing plenty of spirit in the early going and just eight minutes in they should have taken the lead when Aaron Barry's attempted clearance was charged down by Adam Wixted, who charged into the area before pulling the ball back for Sean Brennan - but he miscued horribly.
A lively start to the game was brought to a halt two minutes later when Drogheda goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness, in collecting a Derry corner, crashed to the ground. He received almost 10 minutes of treatment before being removed on a stretcher, with Ryan Coulter taking his place.
The key moments in the game came just before the hour mark when Mark Griffin was presented with two opportunities to break the deadlock. The former Derry striker brought down a ball from Wixted but he couldn't beat Gerard Doherty from close range.
He found himself through again just seconds later, but again he couldn't beat Doherty.
The best Derry could muster was a shot from Kennedy on 69 minutes, but Coulter pushed the ball behind for a corner.
Drogheda could have stolen it late on through Jake Hyland but again Doherty came to the rescue for the Candystripes.
