Doherty’s blunder forces Derry City to settle for draw

UCD 2 Derry City 2: Derry City had to be content with scrambling a point against UCD at Belfield last night, Stewart Greacen’s diving header giving them a share of the spoils, six minutes from time.

It had looked as though Gerard Doherty might have put a severe dent in City’s title chances with an incredible blunder.

The stopper gifted UCD the lead for the second time in the game last night — just moments after Derry had dragged themselves back to level terms.

Trailing by a goal scored from Dean Marshall, right on the stroke of half-time, Derry were on the offensive right from the start of the second half.

But they carried none of the threat which had seen them hammer the same opposition 7-0 just a few weeks ago until the 67th minute of the game when Daniel Lafferty got on the end of a Gareth McGlynn cross to fire Derry back level at 1-1.

But, straight from the kick-off Graham Rusk tried the most speculative of shots from 20 yards and was as amazed as everyone else when keeper Doherty made a complete hash of it and allowed the ball to bounce past him.

It was not a night to remember as far as Derry were concerned as they lost skipper Kevin Deery to injury three minutes before the break He was replaced by Ruairi Harkin.

UCD had the better of the opening exchanges, but the best chance of the first half fell to Derry, a brilliant move moments before Deery’s injury.

Lafferty started it when he fed McGlynn whose cross found Eamon Zayed perfectly place in the box but from just yards out the man who could not stop scoring up until recently amazingly missed the target.

A point was not what they were looking for from the game but in the end were grateful when Greacen got on the end on McGlynn’s 84th minute corner to pinch one.
