Dungannon Swifts 3 Coleraine 0

Rejuvenated Dungannon Swifts leapt two places up the table, this impressive win over Coleraine hoisting them above Donegal Celtic and Saturday’s opponents Portadown — with hat-trick hero Timmy Adamson the main man.

After a slow start, Swifts had the best of the first half exchanges. Adamson was first up heading a Ryan McIlmoyle free over on 16 minutes, the trio of Mickey Ward, Niall Henderson and Ryan Mullan all watching on before the half-hour as their executed shots were turned behind by the busy visiting defence.

Coleraine didn’t have the same creativity, their chances limited to a free curled over the left stanchion from Gareth Harkin on 23 minutes, while Paul Brown and Howard Beverland failed to get their efforts past international U23 goalkeeper Sean O’Neill.

Swifts had been the better team and deservedly entered the break ahead, courtesy of a stunning overhead kick from Adamson after he was picked out by a pinpoint accurate pass from McIlmoyle three minutes from the break.

Dungannon had their tails in the air and added a second goal two minutes after the action resumed. Ward was the architect with a cut-back after taking the ball to the left end-line which allowed a rifled finish to the far corner.

The partnership of McIlmoyle and Adamson struck again on 66 minute. McIlmoyle crossed from the left setting up Adamson for the second time, a neat header securing the match ball for the Newtownabbey striker.

Ward did the hard thing in the 85th minute when he rounded Davy O’Hare but failed to steer his shot through a crowded six yard box, while Ryan O’Neill’s final minute header struck the inside of the post before falling into the keeper’s arms.
