Emery still hopeful of his medal returning
Memories of a long-lost medal will flood back for veteran player Jim Emery (77) today when he takes his seat in the stand at Seaview as a spectator at the Steel & Sons Cup final between Linfield Swifts and Dundela.
For way back in 1967, Emery at 28, was a star for Carrick Rangers when, as 10-1 outsiders, they beat the Duns 3-1 in the Christmas morning clash.
“I had a good game and I assisted in two of the goals,” recalls Emery, attending only his second game in two years because of a hernia problem which has now been cured.
But the black shadow cast over that Christmas was the disappearance of the Emery medal.
“We were celebrating our victory and the medals were being shown around,” he said.
“I didn’t miss mine until I got home to Seymour Hill in Lisburn that evening. It could have slipped out of my pocket. I’m still hoping it will turn up as a kind of Christmas miracle. The football authorities refused to strike me a substitute medal in’67.”
Down the years Emery played for Linfield and was their scout for 22 years.
He was the manager of Bangor FC for a few seasons and wound up his football career as a scout for Everton.
