Glentoran out in front after five-star showing

By Keith Bailie

Glentoran 5 Ards 0: Glentoran cast aside their goalscoring problems to hammer Premiership new boys Ards 5-0 and move to the top of the Danske Bank Premiership table.

The Glens took the lead early on through David Scullion before Calum Birney, Richard Clarke, Jordan Hughes and Niall Henderson hit the back of the net in the second half to put the east-Belfast men top on goal difference.

Over the past month the Glens have failed to fire in front of goal, and with forwards Aaron Boyd and Mark Miskimmin still unavailable. Patterson tried to alleviate the problem by switching from his preferred 4-3-3 to wing-backs.

His plan worked almost immediately. In the fourth minute Jimmy Callacher found himself in space in the middle of the park a delivered a long forward pass that split Ards defence in two. Scullion ran onto the lofted ball and guided it over Graeme McKibbin and into the top corner from just outside the box.

Despite Glentoran's bright start it was another 38 minutes before they registered a shot on target. Jay Magee unleashed a 35-yard shot that was comfortably saved by McKibbin.

Ards had two periods of pressure – just after Scullion's goal and just before the break – but they failed to create a single clear cut chance, wasting numerous set pieces.

The visitors started the second half brightly with Paul McDowell playing in William Faulkner in the 52nd minute, but Faulkner's lobbed effort landed on the roof of the net

Glentoran ended the game as a constant in the 59th minute when Ards failed to clear a Clarke corner. The ball dropped into the path of Birney and he fired it into the roof of the net.

The third goal arrived in the 76th minute when Marcus Kane flighted a magnificent ball in from the left hand flank for Clarke to finish with an emphatic header.

Substitute Hughes added a fourth in the 80th minute when he passed the ball into the net from the edge of the box.

The final goal of the game arrived two minutes from time after Ards failed to clear the ball from inside the box allowing Henderson to drill home.
