Glentoran sign former Derry City centre-half who's had career 'laced with success'

Glentoran boss Gary Smyth says his new centre-half will bring a 'wealth of experience' to the Oval.

Former Derry City and Sligo Rovers defender Gavin Peers has joined the Glens after leaving the north west at the end of the 2018 League of Ireland season.

Dublin-born Peers played for Blackburn Rovers and Mansfield before returning to Ireland to sign for Sligo, where he would spend a decade, winning six trophies including a League of Ireland title.

“I'm delighted to get such an experienced player in to our football club," said Smyth. "Gavin's career has been laced with success no matter what club he was with.

"Obviously his most successful time was at Sligo, were he won the league and 3 FAI Cup medals and made almost 350 appearances. He'll bring a wealth of experience to our defence and to the team in general.”

Glentoran have already added strikers Darren Murray and Lukasz Gwiazda to their panel this month.

Since taking over as boss, Smyth has guided the Glens to back-to-back wins over Institute and Newry City. His side will travel to league-leading rivals Linfield next Monday evening.
