Hamilton the hero again for Glenavon

Glenavon 2 Newry City 1: Gary Hamilton made it nine goals in nine matches as Glenavon stormed back from a goal down to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games — and denied Newry their first back-to-back wins of the season.

Hamilton struck the winner in the 66th minute, just six minutes after skipper Conor Walsh had cancelled out Alan Davidson’s magnificent effort from a 30 yard free-kick right on the half-time whistle.

It was no more than Newry deserved at that stage because they had bossed the game from the start.

They were also out of luck because Neil Teggart fired against a post in 14 minutes and then Andy Graham tapped home from Teggart’s pass only to be denied by a linesman flag.

And John Convery was not best pleased either when his back head flick was also ruled out for offside.

Glenavon showed more spirit and true grit after the interval and skipper Walsh also suffered from the linesman’s offside signal when he scrambled the ball over the line with 56 minutes on the clock.

Frustrated home fans were in more jubilant mood just on the hour when Glenavon finally drew level.

This time there was no flag when Walsh rifled home from 14 yards after being teed up by Trevor Molloy.

And just six minutes later the home side was in front and it was that man Hamilton who did the business to bring keep his run of a goal per game in tact.

Newry defenders were at fault failing to cope with Kyle Neill’s in-swinging corner from the right, but ace predator Hamilton, on loan from Glentoran, still had work to do when the ball reached him at the back post.

Newry were shell-shocked and while they recovered their poise and pushed Glenavon on to the back foot for the remainder of the game they failed to salvage anything from the game.

Glenavon used the occasion to introduce new signing Diarmuid O’Carroll but he didn’t really have an opportunity to show what he can do with former Northern Ireland man Hamilton stealing the limelight again.
