Ten man Glenavon have held Glentoran to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the new Danske Bank Premiership season.

The hosts had been up against it when, with the score at 1-1, Rhys Marshall was sent off for a second yellow card less than 40 minutes in.

The Glens, in the midst of a wave of optimism after their summer takeover and subsequent signings, hit the front on just three minutes. Influential midfielder John Herron did well to beat his man and find striker Darren Murray, who tucked home a neat finish.

However, the lead didn't even last 10 minutes as the Lurgan Blues hit back. Former Northern Ireland international Sammy Clingan curled home his 15th league goal for the club, an inch-perfect free-kick into the bottom corner.

The Glens were given a boost when Marshall was sent to the dressing room before the break, his second yellow for a late lunge on Joe Crowe.

The visitors had much of the possession in the second half but will have hoped to cause Glenavon keeper Jonny Tuffey more problems. Goal-scorer Murray poked a dangerous effort over the bar but Glenavon could even have stolen it at the death, Clingan driving a shot narrowly over the bar.
