Irish League Round-Up: Mallards are Sukka-punched while McCauley double helps Coleraine stay top

Ballymena 1-3 Glentoran; Coleraine 3-0 Carrick Rangers; Crusaders 0-0 Ards; Dungannon 2-1 Warrenpoint; Glenavon 3-1 Cliftonville; Linfield 4-0 Ballinamallard

By Gareth Hanna

Jordan Stewart's Linfield career is up and running. He made sure of that with a hat-trick to help the Blues to a 4-0 win while league leaders Coleraine kept up the pace with a 3-0 victory over Carrick Rangers.

Elsehwere, there were wins for Glenavon, Glentoran and Dungannon while Crusaders slipped up with a 0-0 draw at home to Ards.

Linfield 4-0 Ballinamallard United

Stewart's first was his first league goal for Linfield and while the Mallards held out until half-time, Stewart put them to the sword after the break. His second was a neat finish through the legs of Richard Brush from a Chris Casement cross. And when the third arrived, it marked an unquestionable kick-start to his career at the Blues.

Mark Haughey added a fourth but the day belonged to former Glentoran attacker Stewart.

Coleraine 3-0 Carrick Rangers

Centre-back David Ogilby produced a fine finish to send the league leaders ahead. Brad Lyons teed him up for a spectacular 20 yard volley into the bottom corner - a strike any forward would have been proud of.

Darren McCauley made it two from the spot and then netted his second of the day as the league leaders continued their 100% record.

Glenavon 3-1 Cliftonville

Andrew Mitchell drew level with Paul Heatley at the top of the goal-scoring charts with his seventh of the season. He converted a deflected finish from an Andy Hall pass to open the scores.

Glenavon really ramped up the heat on a mis-firing Cliftonille after half-time and doubled the scoring when Hall converted Bobby Burns' looping cross. Hall returned to his normal position of provider for the third, curling in a top, top notch right wing cross that substitute striker Mark Griffin couldn't miss.

The Reds' front two Jay Donnelly and Joe Gormley finally combined on 80 minutes and Gormley stylishly tapped the ball past the out-rushing Jonny Tuffey, ran round the other side of the keeper and tapped home. It was all too little, too late. There was even time to compound the visitors' misery as Garry Breen was sent off for two yellows in what had been a feisty game.

Ballymena United 1-2 Glentoran

Marcus Kane headed in to put the Glens ahead after Conor Brennan failed to clear a Ross Redman free-kick and Curtis Allen made it two after half-time, heading in John McGuigan's cross.

It's not like the Glens to do anything the easy way and just a minute after Allen's goal, Cathair Friel scored his second in as many games to make it 2-1. Eventually, the visitors did make the points safe as Brennan failed to keep out a McGuigan free-kick.

Dungannon Swifts 2-1 Warrenpoint Town

Chris Hegarty netted a second-half winner for the hosts, converting Thomas Lockhart's fizzed cross.

Swifts captain Ryan Harpur had opened the scores thanks to an assist from Ryan Mayse but against the run of play, Lorcan Forde sent home an equaliser for the league's newest side.

Crusaders 0-0 Ards

Ards frustrated the hosts with goalkeeper Aaron Hogg making one particularly impressive double save before the break. The Crues now fall five points behind leaders Coleraine.
