League's new boys Waterford face Derry in season opener

By Graham Luney

Derry City will play newly-promoted Waterford on the opening day of the 2018 League of Ireland season.

Kenny Shiels' side, who finished fourth in the 2017 Premier Division, will kick off their season at the Regional Sports Centre on Friday, February 16.

Derry's first competitive match at their redeveloped Brandywell ground will be against Sligo Rovers on Friday, February 23.

The Candystripes played their home matches at Maginn Park in Buncrana, County Donegal last season but their new home will feature a covered 955-seat stand, an artificial pitch, training pitch and changing rooms and media facilities.

Meanwhile, former Derry City defender Shane McEleney is currently on trial with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

SSE Airtricity League Premier Division fixtures: Friday, February 16: Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk v Bray Wanderers, St Patrick's Athletic v Cork City, Waterford v Derry City; Saturday, February 17: Sligo Rovers v Limerick.
