Blues ring in the new with Byrne ablaze

By Ian Callender

David Healy praised his new boys as Linfield dug out a 1-0 Danske Bank Premiership win over Carrick Rangers last night in atrocious conditions at the Belfast Loughshore Arena.

Kurtis Byrne, the 27 year old signed from St Patrick's Athletic, scored the winner in the 80th minute and new strike partner Achille Campion, from Cork City, also made a good impression in only his second match as the Blues moved up to fourth.

The goal was set up by Carrickfergus youngster Ryan Strain, whom Healy had introduced just two minutes earlier.

"It was a good goal, a great bit of play by the young substitute, so I'm pleased with that," said the Blues boss. "You make substitutions and sometimes they work. The local boy gave us that bit of spark and it was a great ball and great contact from Kurtis.

"Does it mean we are going to win the league title, probably not, but it puts us in a better position as we move forward."
