Reports from Scotland have indicated that Finnish striker Eetu Vertainen could be on his way back to Linfield, with parent club St Johnstone open to a second loan spell.

The 23-year-old joined the Blues on a temporary basis in January and helped them to the Danske Bank Premiership title, scoring four goals in six appearances for the club.

Amazingly, all four of those goals arrived in one game in March, with Vertainen outstanding against Dungannon Swifts, leading Linfield to a 5-0 win at Windsor Park on their way to the title.

With the champions in need of firepower up front after the departure of Christy Manzinga, a reunion with the Finn makes sense for David Healy’s men, with St Johnstone keen to facilitate the deal.

The Scottish Premiership side have already signed Canadian striker Theo Bair for the new campaign and manager Callum Davidson is actively looking for another forward, which suggests Vertainen is the odd man out.

Should the move go through, Vertainen would be battling with Chris McKee, Ethan Devine, Adam Clarke and Joel Cooper for game time up front in what is a talented forward division.

While reports from Scotland suggest St Johnstone would be open to a loan deal, Vertainen is in the final year of his contract with the club, so any move would effectively end his stay at McDiarmid Park.

In light of that, the Saints may look to sell the Finn as opposed to loaning him, meaning Linfield would have to stump up the cash, something that they may be hesitant to do.
