Linfield's newest striking sensation has been handed a contract extension after only 11 matches in a blue shirt.

Michael O'Connor, 20, joined the club from Finn Harps during the summer and has made a bright start to life at Windsor Park, where he is now set to stay until at least 2020.

After beginning the first four games of the season on the bench, he has started seven of the club's last eight matches. The former Republic of Ireland U19 international netted his fifth goal on Monday evening. Given that it was the winner in his first Big Two derby, perhaps it's little surprise that Linfield felt the time was right to reward his early contribution,

“He’s loved every minute of being at Linfield and he’s proving to be a very good player," boss David Healy told the Linfield website.

"He’s young and enthusiastic and he’s still got a lot of improvement in him but he’s got enormous potential.

"He’s strong and with an eye for goal and I know this news will go down very well with our supporters who’ve taken to him already and who’ve been hugely impressed with his attitude and performances to date.

"I’m delighted that he’s shown his commitment to this club by readily extending his contract for at least another year.”
