Lisburn Distillery 3 Carrick Rangers 1

A Gary Liggett hat-trick ushered in the New Year in style as Lisburn Distillery recorded a vital victory — their first in the Premiership since September — over fellow strugglers Carrick Rangers.

Three is the number for a striker, you want to be hitting a hat-trick but the most important thing today was the three points” said the striker afterwards.

“We have been taking points of the likes of Linfield and Glentoran but you don’t want teams around you taking points of you. I have been out of the side the last few weeks, the manager had a word with me about the reasons why and I took them on board. I could have had a fourth at the end but the main thing was to get the three points no matter what happened and I am delighted about that.”

Paul Heatley scored for Carrick to make it 2-1 before Liggett completed his treble on an afternoon that saw visiting duo Andy Smith and Anto Lagan red carded.

Carrick manager Michael Hughes said: “The boys tried hard, they worked hard.

“We maybe gifted them things by not holding the ball up in crucial areas but, looking at it, I would have to say that it is a fair result.”
