Lurgan Celtic confirm withdrawal from NIFL
Lurgan Celtic have confirmed to the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) that they will be withdrawing from all competitions this season.
There was shock in football circles here last week when Lurgan Celtic announced the decision and yesterday NIFL outlined that the club had formally withdrawn from the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League (PIL) with immediate effect.
After Lurgan Celtic had notified the league last Thursday about their intentions, the Premier Intermediate League committee convened an emergency meeting the following day to consider the development.
On August 16, NIFL was advised by Lurgan Celtic of a potential external support package being made available to the club. The Premier Intermediate League granted the club further time to explore this opportunity and provide assurances of their ongoing viability to the committee by Monday.
Yesterday, though, came the news that Lurgan Celtic had informed NIFL they would be upholding their original decision to withdraw from all NIFL competitions.
It has been decided that the 2019/2020 Premier Intermediate League will be contested by the remaining 11 clubs and there will be no relegation from the PIL this season.
