McAree happy as Bannsiders hold on to edge out former club
Coleraine 2 Dungannon Swifts 1
Rodney McAree was able to celebrate a win over his former employers as goals from Darren McCauley and James McLaughlin helped the Bannsiders get over the line against Dungannon Swifts at The Showgrounds.
After a sluggish start by both teams in the first-half, the breakthrough finally arrived on 30 minutes as McCauley converted from the spot, before McLaughlin added the second five minutes into the second-half.
The visitors ensured there would be an edgy finish as Daniel Hughes marked his comeback from injury with a well taken effort on 62 minutes. The Swifts finished strongly and were denied an equaliser on the goal line twice late on as Coleraine held firm to register all three points.
After the game, McAree said: "We are delighted to get a big three points. Whenever we went 2-0 up, we were probably comfortable at that stage and could have strengthened our lead.
"I thought we had done well up to that point, we could have moved the ball quicker in the first 45 minutes and were quick off the blocks after the break.
"Unfortunately after we were coasting, we put in two tackles and they both rebounded into Daniel Hughes' path and he finishes well. It got Dungannon back into the game, it made it more difficult and they pushed more and more forward as you expected them to do."
Frustrated Swifts boss Kris Lindsay said: "We can't wait for teams to go 2-0 up for us to start playing like that, we need to be doing it for 90 minutes.
"If we do that then I think we'll be alright, but it's up to me to get the players to do that."
