UCD 0 Derry City 2: Derry City announced that they can be a force to be reckoned with in the Airtricity League Premier Division with an excellent away win at Belfield last night.
It was a game which they were never really in danger of losing, especially after taking an early lead through Gareth McGlynn, but it took them until the 87th minute to seal their first three points of the new season when Daniel Lafferty added the second.
After the disappointment of losing their opener at home the previous weekend, the victory will be a tremendous relief to manager Stephen Kenny.
Derry got off to the best possible start with McGlynn's opener - and the first goal of City's premier division campaign — with his eighth minute strike.
It was made by Patrick McEleney, when with great awareness he spotted his fellow midfielder's run and played him in to finish past Ger Barron.
Derry failed to kick on from there, though on the plus side, striker Eamon Zayed was looking more comfortable than he had on his debut. Both he and Ryan McLaughlin had decent chances in the second half before UCD upped the tempo a little.
But any doubts about the outcome were snuffed out when Danile Lafferty scored three minutes from time to secure a fine victory for the Candystripes.
