New signing Whiteside targets a Euro adventure with Sky Blues

By Graham Luney

Ballymena United last night announced the signing of centre-back Scot Whiteside on a two-year deal.

The 21-year-old, who was at Derry City, came through the youth ranks at Rangers and also featured for the Northern Ireland Under-19 side.

He said: "Playing under David Jeffrey and the management team was a big appeal for me to come and be part of building on the success the club has had since they arrived.

"We've got to aim for Europe this year and I want to be a big part of that - I'm looking forward to getting started in pre-season and taking it from there."

Another player on the move is striker Kurtis Byrne, who has left Linfield to join Welsh side The New Saints.

The Dubliner has left the Blues citing family reasons and a desire to return to full-time football.

And the Northern Ireland Football League have confirmed that the traditional season-opening Charity Shield match will not be played this year due to Crusaders' and Coleraine's European commitments.
