Portadown up for fight, says McCabe

Shane McCabe says he fully understands why critics are expecting the Portadown bandwagon to crash.

Ronnie McFall’s men, who host Crusaders tomorrow, are clinging to the coat-tails of Linfield and are only two points behind the Carling Premiership champions.

However, critics question whether the Shamrock Park men have the strength in depth to sustain a title challenge and injuries to star strikers Matthew Tipton, Wesley Boyle and midfielder Tim Mouncey have done nothing to silence the doubters.

McCabe said: “We are realistic people at Portadown,” said the former Glentoran midfielder.

“We have had injuries to senior boys in the last few weeks and that always makes you apprehensive. Obviously we don’t have the resources that Linfield have but I believe our squad of 16 is as good as anyone elses.

“It does become harder when you lose players but we have been on a good run and we are in good shape going into a crucial few games.”
